Bragg's Dragon has been a popular pattern in the South Island and is now gaining popularity throughout the trout fishing scene in Australia. What is essentially a woolly bugger variation has been enhanced by the addition of chartreuse or slightly lumo chenille. This fly comes into it's own during low light conditions, dusk/dawn and overcast days. Work the Braggs with a floating line and sixteen foot leader over and around lake shore weed beds with a figure eight retrieve or further out into the lake at dusk by striping the fly through the surface with a longer retrieve. An intermediate line and a shorter leader produces good results in still waters and when allowed to sink to the bottom of estuary gutters will take it's fair share of bream. Tying Recipe: Bragg's Dragon Hook: Mustad 3666 #6 to #12 or a 34044NPSS #6 for saltwater. Thread: 6/0 light Olive Body: Chartreuse chenille or Glow In The Dark Chenille. Hackle: Grizzly Tail: Golden olive marabou

Probably the best all-round fly for prospecting likely water early in the season. The Woolly Bugger is suggestive of many food organisms e.g. mudeyes, damsel nymphs, stonefly nymphs and baitfish. In smaller sizes tadpoles, stick caddis and even mayfly nymphs. Best retrieved with long slow pulls with long (5 sec) pauses between.
