Gold Tungsten Bead - Olive Nymph
ID: nz85
-
Originally a North American pattern, the Halfback Nymph was tied on long shank hooks in sizes as large as #4. In more recent years this pattern has been adopted by NZ and Aus fly fishers and is now very popular. The version shown here uses a gold tungsten bead in order to get the fly down deep in faster water though regular brass beads work well for shallower or slower moving water. Tungsten is heavier than lead and is also non toxic. There are any number of good hooks available these days to tie this pattern with but a good standard has always been the Mustad 9671. Sizes #10 through to #16 are usually preferred for upstream nymphing. When tying this fly be sure to wind the copper wire over the full length of the shank as it helps to protect the peacock herl. A pronounced thorax is the ideal so don't spare the peacock herl when building this part of the fly up. Halfback Nymph Recipe. Hook: Mustad 9671 or similar. Body: Green/bronze peacock herl. Rib: Fine copper wire Wing Case: Mallard primarys - dark rubber strip. Throat Hackle: Soft webby ginger or black feather. Tail: Cock pheasnt tail. Thread: Black moncord. Head: Gold, silver, or black bead - tungsten for depth.
