The "Dark Brown Stonefly" is one of many successful Kiwi stonefly patterns all of which have their own place and band of devotees. There are however a few features that place this fly near the top of my freestone nymph box - ease of construction, durability, weight, appearance. Most stonefly patterns fall into either of two camps. These being the imitative or suggestive and the D.B.S. is a little of both with a leaning towards the suggestive. Goose biot forked tails as on the D.B.S. are classic and quite representative while the combination of a well shaped thorax and buggy teased out dubbing completes the profile and suggestive elements. This is an easy nymph to tie and as long as care is taken when wiping/gluing the shank and attaching the copper wire rib ends during construction then your fly will last through many encounters with fish. Weight is pretty much a must with stonefly nymphs and apart from the copper rib can be added in the form of wire beneath the thorax or a tungsten bead - preferably a dull colour like copper for the bead.
