The Bullhead is a deadly new fly tied to imitate a galaxia or other small baitfish, tied with a large clipped wool head, it pushes a lot of water so it is easily detected by fish in low light conditions or coloured water. It can either be cast to fish actively feeding on tiddlers, or fished blind near likely spots like weed beds, gutters or rocky points and outcrops. It also works if stripped in front of fish feeding in wind-lanes, sometimes even in bright conditions. Vary your retrieve to suite conditions and don't be afraid to just let it hang in the water as fish will often take the bullhead on the drop.

Matuka style streamers are one of the earliest New Zealand patterns. The first versions of the Matuka used feathers from either the Bittern or Kiwi to form the trailing wing. Once the use of Kiwi and Bittern feathers was banned a great number of Matuka variations began to develop. Parsons Glory being one of the most famous. The Rabbit Matuka is yet another one of these variants and perhaps one of the most successfull. The trailing wing of soft tanned rabbit fur provides a seductive degree of movement to any baitfish pattern but take care not to over do it. The bulk of the rabbit fur tail should not be much longer than the total body length. This helps to avoid the possibility of the tail fouling by wraping around the bend of the hook. Cut the soft tanned natural rabbit skin to about the thickness of a match stick. It is easy to overdress these flies and it's a case of less material providing the best results. An over dressed wing can put the whole fly off balance especially if tied on a light guage wire hook. For this reason Rabbit Matukas are often tied on Mustad 3666 hooks.
