The basic pattern from which the "Black Marabou Muddler" is derived was a North American fly called simply the "Muddler Minnow" and is thought to have first made it's way to these shores via a sample given to David Scholes by Joe Brooks in 1959. The Muddler Minnow is a basically a minnow pattern tied to imitate the North American gudgeon or minnow which are referred to as sculpins in the USA and Canada. A visiting Canadian earlier this summer on Perth's Swan river was heard to exclaim " flathead ? Oh, you mean those big sculpins" which pretty much describes how the real sculpins look and act in lakes and rivers - skipping or hoping along near the bottom. Fished on a sinking line the Muddler Minnow can be worked deep and with it's water pushing deer hair head provides good vibration as well as profile. The Black Marabou Muddler Minnow has a couple of additional features which help when this pattern is fished on a floating line as is popular in Australia. The profile from underneath and side on is enhanced by the black marabou which also supplies additional movement. A few variations on the Muddler Minnow are; large Marabou Muddlers tied on stinger hooks up to size 2 are popular wit
