The "Mrs. Simpson" is a classic example of what is undoubtedly one of the most effective types of wet fly - the "killer". Though originally a New Zealand pattern the Mrs Simpson has been adopted by Australia and the rest of the world to a lesser extent and has accounted for many large trout mostly in lakes. As with many older and popular patterns this fly has been altered and adapted to suite available materials and conditions. The flanking feathers were first and still most often tied with what's referred to as "green rump feathers". These are the soft green fringed feathers towards the base of a ring neck pheasant tail skin. Another successful version uses feathers from further up the skin which are brown with cream edges and referred to as "church window" feathers and Church Window Mrs Simpson. Two or three matched feathers per side are the standard and the finished fly when wet should appear as a slightly bulge sided almond shape with a black tail. The underbody which is most often red, yellow or green can also be weighted.
