Dave's Damsel is the pattern of choice for sight casting to shy cruisers and spooky browns in shallow weedy margins. Being light in weight this fly presents with a minimum of fuss and can be worked for quite a long time before falling into the weed bead and becoming fouled. This is a distinct advantage when faced with having to present your damsel well ahead of the fish to be ambushed. Developed by Dave Bardwell in the South Island to fool shallow lake and oxbow margin cruisers. Another tried and true method of fishing this pattern is to add up to a metre of tippet to the bend of the hook and tie on a Brown NZ Corixa. Fish this team of flies in lakes & still waters without a retrieve and just let the wave or wind action do the job. The hardest part of this prospecting style damsel fishing is to keep the line straight and remain "in touch". It's well worth the effort though especially on those quiet "where are they" sort of days. A bit closer to home; this is one of the few patterns that has taken mullet (in Western Australia) repeatedly. And not just river mullet either but those large silver sea versions.
