While the "thing" flies are far from new in Australian saltwater and Barra circles the Chartreuse Thing is a variation which has received less attention than it's much well know cousin the "Pink Thing". The recent success by visiting anglers who were chasing Barra at Weipa has stirred some of the Queensland tyers into action with the weed guarded and weighted form being a big favourite for casting into cover and bead chain eyed versions being better suited to fishing the flats. Some folk prefer as many as six white saddle hackle feathers on each side of the tail to form a more solid shape while others will tie as few as two per side for a semi transparent look. As with all fly tying there is no right or wrong so be sure to experiment with your Chart Things. The inclusion of a rattle will help when fishing in really dirty run off water. Tying Recipe: Chartreuse Thing, weighted, weed guard. Hook: 2/0 TMC 800s Thread: 3/0 Flat Waxed Nylon. Eye: Medium Machined Eyes or Bead Chain Wing: Six White Saddle Hackles and two Grizzly Hackles. Colar: Chartreuse Cross Cut Zonker over White Bucktail. Flash: Pearl Krystal Flash Weed Guard: Heavy Mono or Fluorocarbon.
